ChocobosCatching Chocobos Catching a chocobo is simple. Simply find a chocobo track and walk over it a few times. Make sure you have a Chocobo Lure materia equipped, otherwise, you will not meet chocobos. The higher the level of the Chocobo Lure, the higher chance of finding chocobos. You will always find chocobos with enemies, so finish off the enemies, and the chocobo is yours. To help finish off the enemies, buy greens at Chocobo Sage's house or from Chocobo Billy. The Tantal Greens work best. Use the greens on the chocobo, and that way, the chocobos won't escape. Do not attack the chocobo, or it will attack all the players, including the opponents, for minimal damage, and it will leave. Once you catch a chocobo, you can ride it around without being attacked, but once you dismount, the chocobo will escape, unless you're on the second and third disc, where you can keep chocobos in the Chocobo Ranch. Chocobo Ranking There are a few different types of chocobo rankings. When you move chocobos, Chocobo Billy will tell you what type of chocobo it is. The type of chocobo you catch depends on the type of enemies you encounter with the chocobo. If you caught a chocobo near the icicle inn with at least two Jumpings, you will get a wonderful chocobo. If you catch a chocobo with at least one Bandersnatch, you will get a poor chocobo. If you catch one with at least one Spencer near the Gold Saucer, you will get a Good Chocobo. If you catch one with a Flying Sickle, you will get a Good or Average chocobo. If you find one with a Harpy, you will get an Average chocobo. If you catch any around Wutai, the chocobo will have it's head down, and walking, when you move it to the stables. If you catch any near the Chocobo Ranch, you will get poor chocobos. If you catch a chocobo with at least one Spiral near Mideel, you will get a great Chocobo. If you catch one with Headhunters, you will get a chocobo with its head down, walking when you move it to the stable. The higher the rank, the better the chocobo's stats. Keeping Chocobos You can keep a total of six chocobos in the Chocobo Ranch, but there is a fence outside where you can keep up to four wild chocobos you just caught, but you can't feed them greens or register them in races. Instead, use the 'Moving Chocobos' option when you talk to Chocobo Billy. You must talk to Chocobo Billy's Grandpa for the stables, and each cost about 3,000 gil. After you put a chocobo in a stable, you can take it out and ride it whenever you like, and it won't run away. If you keep your chocobo outside the Ranch, you can't feed or mate it. Feeding Chocobos You can feed your chocobos to improve their stats. The Sylkis and Reagan Greens are the best because they raise all the areas of a chocobo's stats, but they're expensive. You can get them at Chocobo Sage's house for 5,000 and 3,000 gil. Initially, you could also feed your chocobos Tantal Greens, which also raise all areas of a chocobo's stats, but they don't raise much. They're only 400 gil. Because Sylkis and Tantal Greens raise all areas of a chocobo's stats, you can feed them these greens to check if a chocobo's stats are maxed out. If a chocobo's stats are maxed out, you can't raise their stats anymore. Racing Chocobos You can go to the Gold Saucer in the second and third disc and talk to Ester in the Chocobo Square to register a chocobo in a race. You can also check a chocobo's stats after the chocobo is registered. While racing, don't boost too much, or your chocobo will lose stamina. Only use it at the end to catch up to the other chocobo racers. Make good use of the Square button, but don't use it too much, or your chocobo will lose stamina. If you're having trouble, hold down the R1, R2, L1 and L2 buttons to make the chocobo's stamina regenerate. To get the best items, which are worth more gil, try to have as much stamina as you can get remaining if you win. This won't be a problem if you get to the finish line ahead of time. There are four classes, C class, B class, A class and finally, S class, the ultimate best. C class chocobos have around 70-80mph for their top speed, B class have 80-90mph, A class 90-100mph, and S class 100-200mph. Your chocobo will go up a class if you win three times, long or short courses. If you win about fifteen times in S class, Ester will give you a Choco Bracelet, Cat's Bell, Precious Watch, and a whole bunch of other items. Nuts Give nuts to chocobos to mate them. You can buy nuts at Chocobo Sage's house or from Chocobo Billy. You can also steal nuts from enemies, but if you just buy nuts, you won't get special chocobos. The type of nut used for mating chocobos determines the type of chocobos that will hatch. The ones that you'll need to get the special chocobos are the Carob and Zeio Nuts. To get a Carob Nut, run around in the dark grassy area near the Bone Village, and you might find this monster called a Vlakorados. If you don't, go to the lighter grassy areas. Steal from it, and you will get the Carob Nut. You can only steal once from one. You can also buy a Carob Nut from the Gold Saucer as the first secret item in the Wonder Square. Get a Zeio Nut from Goblin Island, Which is the island just north from the Chocobo ranch. Steal from the Goblins in the forest area. Mating Chocobos When you mate chocobos, you need two chocobos of the opposite gender, and must not have been mated or been offspring for within an hour. The offspring will have the same abilities as it's parents, so make sure the chocobos you mate have high stats. Special Chocobos There are four different types of special chocobos, each with different abilities. The green chocobo or mountain chocobo can climb over mountains and a few ledges, because of the special soles on their feet. The blue or river chocobos can ferry people across the water by running really fast. Blue chocobos cannot ride over the ocean. The black or mountain and river chocobo has the same abilites as the blue and green chocobo. The gold or ocean chocobo can travel over the ocean by running really, really, fast, and also go anywhere on land, other than towns. (Notice how the gold chocobos kind of sink in the ocean when you just leave them there.) You need to mate a Good and Great chocobo with a Carob Nut to get a green or blue chocobo. If you get a green, switch the order in which you select the chocobos to mate, but still use a Carob Nut, and you might just have a blue chocobo, and vice versa. Mate a green and blue chocobo with a Carob Nut to get a black chocobo. To get a gold chocobo, mate a black and wonderful chocobo with a Zeio Nut. Initially, you can talk to Chocobo Sage a few times, and he will eventually remember how to get the special chocobos, and if you ever need to review the information, you can always talk to Chole, who's in the Chocobo Ranch. Note that there's a waterfall in the long course of the Chocobo race track. If you have a green, black or gold chocobo, you can pass it without slowing down. If you pass the waterfall with the blue chocobo, it will slow down. ![]() |
